Dream Burnie Municipal Band
The group played its inaugural concert on the Kmart plaza rooftop on the twenty-first of October in The Year Of Our Lord Two Thousand and Twenty Three. (Well, the second level at least 'cos it rained.) The band comprised of a supergroup of Burnie musical alumni including Twinkle Digitz (Will Hindmarsh), Van Walker and Zane Lindt.
As told by Will Hindmarsh a.k.a. Twinkle Digitz:
When Justin Heazlewood first floated the idea of putting together a "Dream Burnie" band, I joked that the band should play a Beatles style rooftop gig atop Burnie's Kmart plaza. I made it as a throw away remark but Justin ran with it and made it happen, coz that's the kinda guy he is! He got it all going with the incredible support of the Burnie Arts Council (especially Lyndal Thorne) and the DREAM TEAM was born!
Now, with that daydream a reality, it was tasked for me to put together a band of Burnie raised musos... A long list of names immediately entered my dome. There are so many great ex-pat musicians of my generation (Gen Xers / ancient millennials) living in Melbourne.
I ran it by about seven of my musical pals, all great players who have rocked in many formations together in the past. In the end we decided to keep it lean and mobile as a three piece with Van Walker, Zane Lindt and myself - switching between keys, bass and guitar with programmed beats.
We put together a fun set of songs to match the occasion of playing atop a rooftop:
· Stadium prog
· Burnie themed Beatle cover
· Our own originals
The plan was to perform on the top level carpark (the biggest reveal since Daft Punk at Coachella) BUT we were all biting our nails in the days leading up as it was looking like a powerful storm was blowing into B-town. In the end the storm was a bit of a drizzly fart in the wind, nevertheless, to protect the electrical gear we drove the ruckus down to the mid-level (undercover) carpark. In the end it worked out great as we were better able to make eye contact with the crowd and passers by below.
We didn't know what to expect from the crowd reception. We were stoked when a tidy and appreciative group of passers by and pals assembled to provide a great vibe. We took our duty seriously to entertain and surprise BURNIE with our sonic ambush!
It’s worth noting we also played two other gigs, joined by Josh Earl's MCing and standup skillz:
· Lunchtime gig at Hellyer College with a great audience of cool, receptive teens.
· A really great concert at Burnie Arts along with some great local acts.
... Or, maybe it was all a dream?!!
